Self-guided tours

Learn the history of Acton Court at your own pace with our audio guides. There will be a selection of tours available, each with a different perspective.

The audio tours

Acton Court’s guides accompany you on a selection of self-guided audio tours. Two of the tours cover information that a guided tour would offer. In addition there is a theatrical tour. We hope to provide more specialist tours in the future.

A walk around the outside of Acton Court with Angela Nutbrown

This tour covers information about the standing building, grounds and garden.

A visit to the King’s Rooms with Rodger Fowler

Rodger will guide you through the three rooms that were built especially for the visit of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn in 1535. You will also have access to some of the downstairs rooms.

Theatrical tour: Lady Joan Poyntz as written and told by Brenda Page

The wife of Sir Nicholas Poyntz invites you to visit her home and share memories of her family and the people they knew through the momentous reigns of four Tudor monarchs, from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I.

Music: His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts: Bassedance by Henry VIII and Hugh Ashton’s Maske available here

Jacob Heringman playing Faulte d’argent from the album Josquin des Prez

You can listen to samples from the audio tours here.

How the audio tours work

Pick up your sanitised audio guide handset from reception on arrival - free with your admission. There are some written instructions available on how to use them, but feel free to ask if you have any questions. You can choose which tours you wish to follow during your time slot.

Once you've finished your tours, please return handsets to reception. They will be cleaned thoroughly ready for the next user.
